More than $235,000 was raised for financial aid at Parker School’s 10th annual Kahiau dinner/auction gala March 7 at the Fairmont Orchid on the Kohala Coast.
It was the most money ever raised at the yearly benefit, which was attended by nearly 300 people.
About half of the 300 kindergarten through 12th-grade students at Parker receive financial assistance, and Kahiau, the school’s largest fundraiser of the year, is key in making this possible.
The Hawaiian word kahiau means “to give generously from the heart,” and every year the school puts on the gala as a fun way to help provide community children with a college-preparatory education at Parker.
Parker School wants to thank the many sponsors, donors, volunteers and attendees who helped make the event a success.
Jump ropers show heart
Parker Lower School students participated in their annual Jump Rope for Heart Event on Feb. 26.
Donations from family, friends and sponsors totaled $8,590, far surpassing their $5,000 goal.
On the day of the event, with Parker School 11th-graders on hand to help facilitate, the younger students gathered under blue skies on the lower school’s field and moved through various jumping stations as their favorite music boomed in the background.
The stations had activities such as solo jump roping, partner jumping, parachute fun, group jumping and team races.
The Jump Rope for Heart event raises money for the American Heart Association to help children with heart problems, and also teaches the young participants about how to keep their own hearts healthy through exercise and good nutrition.
